How Dreams Enhance our Lives by Simran M
As human beings, we spend one-third of our lives sleeping. This one-third is intricately connected to the other two-thirds, as dreams are the bridge between our conscious mind and our Higher Self.
Dreams are a storehouse of guidance and knowledge. They give us insight regarding:
Ø Our thought processes - how we view a certain situation
Ø Our attitudes and beliefs - what we actually believe to be true about our lives and ourselves. This may be in total contrast to what we think to be true in waking life. When we are asleep, our defenses are down and hence reality presents itself uninhibited.
Ø Solutions and Ideas – once we understand what is blocking our growth we understand how to move forward
Ø Relationships - by showing us our disempowering behaviors dreams help us to understand and change what is not working for us. We cannot change others but by making positive changes to ourselves, we make positive changes to our relationships.
The first and foremost thing that we must understand about dreams is that everything that appears in our dreams is a representation of us. Every person, animal and thing in our dreams represents an aspect of us that we are not facing or that we need to deal with. So if your friend John appears in your dream, think about what John represents to you. Use an adjective/adjectives to describe him, example, secretive. That is the aspect of yourself that you are exploring - secretive. Even the background and scenery represents us - our inner landscape. Let me illustrate this with an example.
Dream scene 1: I am entering a restaurant with a man who is disabled, but it’s not clear what kind of disability he has. He is tall, fair and wearing a white shirt. I don’t know this man. He goes and sits at someone else’s table. And I’m thinking, “How can he do that, that’s not our table.” Then the waiter comes and says something and he gets up and goes away to another table.
In the above dream, the restaurant represents the idea of nourishment and fulfillment. So that is what is being explored here. My subconscious mind is drawing attention to this facet of my life, as this is what needs attention right now. The man with a disability is a stranger, someone I don’t know in my waking life. This represents a side of myself that is unknown to myself. He is “fair” and wearing a “white” “shirt”. The shirt represents my persona at work. It is white – meaning pure, clean. But when he goes and sits at another person’s table, he is breaking the rules. The waiter represents the side of myself that is responsible for bringing nourishment to me. The message that I get from this dream is that I seek fulfillment in my work by being pure, clean and fair. But I am afraid to overstep the general rules of society and come forward. I, as the waiter, am preventing this unknown side of myself from stepping out. Once I understand this message when I awake, I can start asking myself (1) why am I afraid of expressing this side of myself (2) what is preventing me from expressing this side. Thus begins the journey to unfolding the way through to our growth and transformation.
Our dreams are usually progressive, which means that the following dreams will be a continuation of the same theme. So if we record our dreams regularly and understand the messages, we will be shown the matter that needs our attention at that point of time and how we need to deal with it. To me it is like a beautiful story that our Higher Self weaves and presents to us to help us with our life journey.
