The Meaning of Dreams by Simran M

What are dreams? Where do they come from? Are they real? Are they mere projections of our mind or do they have a greater purpose?

If we look back at the history of dreams we will get a better understanding on the meaning of dreams and their purpose. American Indians believe that dreams guide and inspire the soul. In ancient times beautiful temples were built for the sole purpose of inducing dreams. The most famous Dream Temple was at Epidaurus near Corinth.

People would travel for miles, often on foot, to visit one of these dream temples. On arrival, the traveler would be greeted by temple aides who offered him food and drinks. After a bath, the traveler would consult a priest and tell him about his problem, which could be anything pertaining to health, relationship, wealth etc. Then he would get a good night's rest and the next day would be spent in prayer, fasting and a purification bath with scented oils. He would then put on a clean white robe and enter the temple. This was followed by an impressive ceremony led by the priest, imploring Aesculapius, the Greek God of healing to come and help the pilgrim. Lastly there would be a dream incubation ritual and the pilgrim would be taken to a special room in the Temple of Dreams for a good night's sleep. That night the pilgrim would have a dream that would offer suggestions and solutions to his problem.

A few centuries later Sigmund Freud drew the world’s attention to dreams with his famous book 'The interpretation of Dreams' which was published in 1900.  Carl Jung and Dr. Calvin Hall continued to research and explore the subject further.

History is rich with stories of famous personalities whose lives were enhanced by dreams. Hungarian Physiologist Nobel prize winner Albert Gyorgi said, “My work is not finished when I leave my workbench in the afternoon. I go on thinking about my problems all the time…..and continue thinking about them when I sleep because I wake up…I do with answers to questions that have been puzzling me.”

Robert Louis Stevenson, the Scottish novelist and poet, used to ask his “dream helpers” to give him a marketable story. That’s how he got the plot for the famous ‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ and many of his other stories too.

Elias Howe, the creator of the sewing machine, went to sleep thinking about how to create a needle that would catch the thread on the sewing machine. He dreamed of being attacked by African natives with spears that had a hole in the point. And that’s how he got his answer and created his needle that worked perfectly.

Thomas Edison, the American scientist who invented the light bulb and the phonograph, kept a cot in his work area. Whenever he faced a problem, or needed a new or better idea, he would lie down and doze off lightly with his mind concentrated on the solution. He realized that just by relaxing his body and mind he received new ideas from “space”

Much of our greatest music came from dream levels, such as Handel’s ‘Messiah’, ‘Silent Night’ and many others. And the list is long. But the point is that this knowledge and guidance from dreams is available to everyone, if only we learn to tune in, remember our dreams and connect the dots.

Delightful Dreaming!

In the next episode, we will explore how dreams can help us to enhance our lives.
