Achieve your goals by getting yourself a Life Coach. With the pace of life today and wanting to accomplish so much in twenty four hours, it is sure to get overwhelming sometimes. You work hard all day and then want to keep fit and healthy, spend time with family and friends, bring up your kids and also have the time to nurture yourself. Juggling relationships, self, work and family can become tricky, when this happens, you may feel unsatisfied with all aspects in your life like a hamster who has been running and running in his wheel and coming out only to see that he is still exactly where he was in the first place. You know that you are capable of holding it all together and of doing much more as looking back you can see how much you have accomplished in your past. How do you make it happen now?
This is where having a life coach can help you kick start and sustain the change and growth you desire.
What is life coaching?
Life coaching will firstly involve you in an exploration where your coach will invite you to stop where you are by asking you probing questions to assist you in discovering what you really really want. A certified and experienced life coach will guide you in identifying the wants, and the underlying desires that drive these wants. They would then help you work out a realistic time frame by which you want to achieve these "wants" and then work backwards with you to map out strategic steps to get you there. Though coaching works best when they are goal-oriented, many coach-client relationships are quite fluid and work together to help the client create more empowering daily habits.
Typically, coaching is recommended for 3 months to a year. It has been said that it takes 90 days for habits to form fully and having a coach supporting you through that time is very effective. The first 3 months would be broken up into 12 weekly sessions followed by a maintenance program of monthly calls for the rest of the year. The coach would follow up by email or text messages in between the weekly sessions to hold the client accountable. Many coaches these days are trained to coach over the phone and you don’t even have to leave your home or office to have your sessions. It is slowly becoming acceptable for employees to speak to their coaches during their lunch break from work. Certified Life Coaches are bound by confidentiality agreements which they would sign with you when you commence coaching. A good way to see if a particular coach will work for you is to read their client testimonials.
What life coaching is not.
A life coach is not an expert consultant in your given field and neither are they counsellors or therapists. Therapy works from the past and life coaching starts from the present. Counselling may be needed following a single and clearly identified trauma like bereavement, serious accident to self or family, divorce or redundancy. Consulting is specific to the industry and work in question. A life coach can coach a cardiologist without knowing anything about the workings of a heart, as coaching works on the premise that the client is the expert. The whole process of coaching is to get the client to create more opportunities and neurological pathways. It encourages the client to reframe situations and consider new perspectives.
Most coaches do not advocate giving advice to clients, preferring to work as a catalyst in helping the client define their own way forward. Life coaching has absolutely no connections with psychiatry.
A typical week when you have a coach would start with a powerful and confronting half hour phone session followed by you agreeing to take on certain tasks and “homework”. The week would follow with cheerful and supporting text messages when you accomplish the tasks you set out to do, nagging messages when you don’t complete your tasks, questioning your excuses. Do you want to have a life full of reasons (why you do not have the stuff you want) or results?
Some of the most common reasons people sign up with a coach are
– to earn more, change career, assert self at work, be more productive, be happier.
– to lose weight, dress better, gain muscle tone.
– to find love or that dream partner, to communicate better in relationships, to end toxic ones or to be happy in the current situation.
What does it cost?
Life coaching can cost anywhere between USD1200 – USD2400 for 3 months. Most coaches will offer a trial session before you sign up for the three months program. Averagely a therapist or counsellor would charge anywhere between USD60 to USD500 for an hour, however that is just a one off consultation. Coaching with us is not a once a week consultation, it is a relationship where the coach and client work towards the clients success.
Who can benefit from working with a coach?
If you are reasonably successful, willing to stretch out of your comfort zone, are willing to
discover what is holding you back and move beyond them, get a new perspective and see things from a new angle
and become more aware of your influences then working with a coach is ideal for you. Along the way, you will also
learn the art of surrounding yourself with people that truly support you,
discover what you truly desire, design strategies to create the experiences you want to have and
achieve meaningful, consistent results that are long-lasting.
As a community, we hesitate from looking for help – more of us need to accept and believe that it is really OK to ask for help and support.
What prompted some to go to a life coach?
- I was stuck in circumstances, tired of complaining about them and as a result drawing even more negative situations. From a positive, confident person, I had shifted to a negative, complaining person. This hurt me a lot. While I knew, I had to shift, I was unable to do so and the universe answered my prayers in the form of a Life Coach.
- I suddenly started feeling very down. I was unsure what I wanted to do with my life and was questioning every decision I made. I became very moody and lost confidence.
- I wanted to have a happy life by all means: love life, family life, social life, personal health and also career.
- I was having difficulty thinking straight and feeling a bit restless and needed help in putting my mind out there and getting an unbiased feel of it. I have also been trying to get rid of some unneeded weight and hadn’t been able to.
What is NLP?
Many coaches are also trained in NLP -
Neuro Linguistic Programming is a technology for change based on the language and words we use in our mental dialogue and the words we use in our day to day lives and in goal setting.
Striving to get the best out of life is not only natural, it's achievable. The hard part is finding the motivation to overcome your stalling. Setting smart goals is easy, making resolutions are common every 1st of January, signing up with a gym is too easy too, the challenging thing is sticking to the plan. Staying motivated to act inspite of habit, laziness, boredom or any other excuse we can conjure up.
We all could use someone who dedicates time every week just to listen to us.
Friends and family buy our excuses and dramatic stories, a coach will not. A coach would spot your excuses and your limiting beliefs and work ways with you to enrol you into effective action. They would mirror your attitudes and beliefs back to you and give you feedback if you allow them to do so, after which they would suggest alternate perspectives and beliefs that would be more conducive to you getting what you say you want. Your relationships and communication improves as you become more clear and specific, and one of the most common “by-products” of “fixing” any area of your life, is that your key relationships improve. Life coaching can be a very confronting and spiritual experience.
